What is CBD?

CBD or Cannabidiol is a chemical compound. It is naturally occurring in the hemp plant often referred to as Cannabis Sativa. CBD can be taken orally with CBD capsules, CBD tablets, CBD gummies or other CBD food supplements. It can also be taken sublingually with a CBD oil, which involves consumption via the underneath of the tongue using a tincture (usually before swallowing). CBD creams and balms can also be used to apply CBD topically to the skin.

CBD is used by many people to self-treat a range of concerns such as sleep or pain. It does not require a prescription in Ireland and is available for general sale. However, different parts of the world have different rules and the CBD landscape is always changing. A report in 2017 from the World Health Organisation found that CBD could prove beneficial in a range of conditions from multiple sclerosis to Parkinson’s while also helping general pain, anxiety and stress.

CBD is legal in Ireland so long as the strain of hemp it comes from is EU approved, CBD products must also contain no THC. For this reason it is important to only buy CBD oils and supplements from trusted suppliers who are able to trace the source of their CBD products. At HempWell we organically grown the hemp used for our products in Europe. The plants are processed at a GMP certified facility and we manufacture here in the UK. Our CBD supplements and topicals are regularly tested by third-parties to ensure quality and consistency. This also serves as evidence of the great cannabinoids (and lack of THC!) found in our CBD products.

Does it get you high?

Naturally occurring in hemp plants you will find Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) among over a hundred other compounds. This particularly compound is well-know due to its psychoactive properties that induce the infamous “high” associated with cannabis. CBD is non-psychoactive so will not produce any “high” effect whatsoever. CBD products with the THC removed allow you to get many of the perceived benefits of the Cannabis Sativa plant, without the negatives.
