CBD and Fitness

Exercise puts a considerable amount of stress on our bodies, in both positive and negative ways. This type of stress leads to adaptation and increased physical performance (such as lifting heavier weights) but physical trauma and prolonged wear and tear can lead to injuries and pain. Many people are looking to buy hemp creams and CBD balms to help with performance and recovery. Some athletes are even using CBD for pain and recovery.

Potential fitness benefits of CBD

There are several proposed benefits to using CBD oil, CBD balms or other CBD products when considering CBD for fitness. while more evidence is needed to support these benefits, there are many ongoing trials looking at CBD and fitness performance.

Pain relief is often needed for fitness or exercise, for example due to injuries or over-exertion. Traditional painkillers called NSAIDS (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) such as ibuprofen can be detrimental for athletes. These painkillers can have a higher risk of gastric trauma which can result in a range of issues with different intensities. For example benign dyspepsia or upper GI bleeding. Athletes and fitness enthusiasts are often looking for safety, natural treatments to concerns they may have and hemp cream and CBD oil are just some examples. CBD may help to manage pain and buying CBD for pain relief could be considered.

The anti-inflammatory properties of CBD could make it an effective agent in helping to treat inflammation or swelling. This provides scope for CBD and hemp creams to help with pain in fitness.

Sleep can be really important for fitness recovery. If you are pushing your body during training, then you will likely need more and better quality sleep. CBD may help promote a better sleepS2 so there could be benefits to fitness recovery with CBD.

CBD and pain FAQs

Can CBD make pain worse?

CBD has anti-inflammatory properties that generally ease pain. CBD is not known to increase pain per se. There are some findings to suggest high frequency use of marijuana can lead to increased and prolonged pain, albeit not attributable to the CBD compound and not the case with hemp-derived CBD usage.

How much CBD should I take for pain after surgery?

While it can differ between people and circumstance, a medium dose of 25-50mg might be a good place to start. One study showed that CBD was effective at providing pain relief after surgery. In this study patients were given 25 or 50mg of CBD, with the best results deriving from those who took 50mg. To learn more about which dosage could be right for you, check out our dosage guide here for more information.

What CBD products are best for pain?

To tackle specific pain, such as a bad knee or arm, a topical cream would be a good choice. CBD is absorbed by the skin and delivered to the target area to help reduce inflammation. CBD oil can be a good choice to get CBD into your bloodstream which can then help your body to provide relief where needed. Customers may chose to use pure CBD oils to address back pain for example, where applying a cream can be difficult and pain may not be localised or close to the skin surface.

Consult your doctor if you’re thinking of taking CBD while on medication.

How long does CBD take to work?

CBD has short and long term effects. In the short term, depending on how you choose to take CBD, you will begin to feel effects from anywhere between 10 minutes and 2 hours. However, CBD can also have a longer term effect on you and your body. As you continue to take CBD, some will stay in your body, and slowly build up to further help your endocannabinoid system. As a rule of thumb, we recommend that you use CBD consistently for at least 2 weeks to begin to see the full effects of our products.

Can I give CBD to my pet?

You can give CBD to pets, but be aware they need a much smaller dose than humans. CBD is becoming increasingly popular to help pets with pain relief, however be aware that much less research has been done into CBD in animals than in humans. If you are planning to give CBD to your pet, start with an extremely low dose (we would recommend a half dose of our 500mg CBD oil), and increase slowly up to a full dose if required. We do not recommend giving CBD to any animals smaller than cats. We recommend consulting with your vet before giving CBD to animals.

Can you workout on CBD?

CBD is safe and shouldn’t interfere with a workout. That being said, at very high doses some report CBD causing drowsiness, so it would be advised to take a lower dose before, or save a higher dose for after. The FSA recommends a maximum daily dosage of 70mg.

Can CBD help muscle growth?

While there is no evidence yet to suggest CBD supports muscle growth, it’s anti-inflammatory properties make it an effective option for post-workout muscle recovery.

What CBD products are best for fitness?

If you’re looking for targeted muscle or joint relief, a topical cream would be a good choice. These are absorbed by the skin to deliver the CBD to the targeted area. However, CBD oil drops are great supplement to a diet as they can easily be added to shakes or smoothies, or taken directly. Our pure CBD oils use MCT oil as a carrier, which are easily absorbed by the body and have only 7 calories per ml of heart-health fats.
