Taking CBD gummies is as simple as it looks: chew one, ideally with or after food, and wait an hour or two. The questions people actually have are about numbers. How many is one gummy worth? How many a day? When? Does it matter whether you have eaten? This guide answers those for our gummies sold in Ireland, which come in 10mg and 25mg pieces, and explains the one piece of research that changes how you should take them.
We cover what is in a gummy and why the measured dose is the point, how to start and how to adjust, the daily ceiling we work to, timing and food, how gummies compare with oil and capsules, and the practical details (storage, travel, children, pets). Our gummies are broad spectrum, vegan and made at our laboratory in York Science Park; everything here is written for a food supplement, not a medicine.

What is in a CBD gummy
A CBD gummy is a pectin sweet with a measured amount of CBD in it. Ours use a broad spectrum hemp extract, which keeps the plant’s minor cannabinoids and terpenes with the THC removed, set in fruit pectin rather than gelatine, so they are vegan. Each pot of 30 is labelled by its total CBD: the 300mg pot is 10mg per gummy, the 750mg pot 25mg per gummy, and the 600mg fruit pots 20mg per gummy. That measured dose is the reason gummies exist. With an oil you measure; with a gummy the measuring has been done, and you count.
What a gummy does not contain is THC. In Ireland that is not a nicety: the Food Safety Authority of Ireland treats a food “containing any level of THC” as a narcotic drug, so a legal gummy here is a THC-free one. Ours are independently lab tested and the report for each product is on our lab reports page. If you are new to the difference between isolate and broad spectrum, our guide explains it; our CBD edibles in Ireland article covers the wider category.
How many gummies to take
Start low and go slowly, exactly as you would with an oil. For most people that means one 10mg gummy a day for the first week, then two if nothing is happening, then either three 10mg or one 25mg. Most of our customers settle somewhere between 30mg and 60mg a day, which is one or two 25mg gummies, and that lines up with the amounts people settle at with oil (33mg, 50mg or 66mg, a full pipette of the 1000mg, 1500mg or 2000mg bottles). Our dosage guide explains the method in full.
The ceiling we work to across the range is 70mg of CBD a day for healthy adults. In gummies that is seven 10mg pieces or two 25mg pieces plus a couple of 10mg ones, and there is no good reason to be near it. Research does not show benefit stacking up with amount, and the only trials that used large doses saw more side effects, not more effect. A pot of 30 taken one a day is a month; taken two a day it is a fortnight, which is worth knowing before you choose the strength.
| Pot | Per gummy | A low daily amount | A typical settled amount | Do not exceed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 300mg (30 gummies) | 10mg | 1 to 2 gummies (10 to 20mg) | 3 to 5 gummies (30 to 50mg) | 7 gummies (70mg) |
| 600mg fruit pots (30) | 20mg | 1 gummy (20mg) | 2 to 3 gummies (40 to 60mg) | 3 gummies (60mg) |
| 750mg (30 gummies) | 25mg | 1 gummy (25mg) | 1 to 2 gummies (25 to 50mg) | 2 gummies (50mg) |
When to take them, and why food matters
A gummy is swallowed and digested, so what else is in your stomach changes how much CBD gets through. This is the best-evidenced fact in CBD pharmacology and the one most guides skip. In the safety trial of the prescription CBD solution, a high-fat meal “increased CBD plasma exposure (Cmax and AUCt) by 4.85- and 4.2-fold” compared with taking it fasted (Taylor et al., 2018). In a study of pure CBD capsules the peak level was on average 14 times higher after a high-fat breakfast (Birnbaum et al., 2019). Those were prescription doses, but the mechanism is the same: CBD dissolves in fat, and fat carries it across the gut wall.
Two practical rules follow. Take your gummies with or just after a meal that contains some fat, and take them at the same point in the day every day, so that whatever you absorb is consistent. Many people have one with breakfast and one after dinner; if sleep is the reason you are taking them, the evening one about an hour before bed makes more sense, and our sleep guide covers that.
How long they take to work and how long they last
Because a gummy goes through the digestive system, it is slower than oil held under the tongue. Most people report feeling it in 45 minutes to two hours, and the pharmacokinetic data put the peak in the blood somewhere between one and four hours after swallowing (Millar et al., 2018). The effect is gentler and longer than oil rather than sharper. Give one gummy at least two hours before deciding it has done nothing and taking another; the commonest beginner mistake is stacking doses in the first hour. Our guide on how long CBD takes to work compares every format.
Gummies vs oil vs capsules
- Precision: oil wins, because a quarter pipette lets you move in 4 to 17mg steps. Gummies move in 10mg or 25mg steps, which is fine once you know your amount.
- Speed: oil under the tongue is felt sooner. Gummies and capsules are similar to each other.
- Taste and convenience: gummies, clearly. No pipette, no earthy taste, nothing to spill. They are also the easiest format to take at work or carry in a bag.
- Vegan: gummies and oils yes; capsules no (bovine gelatine). Our oil vs capsules guide has the detail.
- Sugar: a gummy is a sweet. If you are counting sugar, oil or capsules carry none.
Plenty of customers use two formats: an oil at home where the pipette is to hand, gummies for the day. Just add the milligrams together.
Practical questions: storage, travel, children, pets
Keep the pot sealed, cool and out of direct sun; warmth makes pectin gummies soften and stick, and they keep best in a cupboard rather than a car. They travel well within Ireland and the EU, where our products are sold legally; if you are flying further afield, check the destination’s rules first (our guide to bringing CBD into Ireland covers the Irish side). Gummies look and taste like sweets, so keep them where children cannot reach them; they are adult food supplements and not for anyone under 18, during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. They are not for pets either. If you take regular medication, read our interactions guide and ask your pharmacist before you start.
How we do it at HempWell
Our gummies start with hemp grown from EU-certified seed on our own farm in Europe, extracted with supercritical CO2 and processed to remove the THC while keeping the rest of the plant’s profile. They are made and potted at our laboratory in York Science Park, independently lab tested, with the reports published on our lab reports page, and the range was developed with guidance from our Scientific Advisor, Professor Mike Barnes. More than 2,000 verified customers have reviewed our products. Gummies are available on subscription at 20% off, and we deliver across Ireland with DPD, free over €50, same-day dispatch before 1pm.
Frequently asked questions
How many CBD gummies should I eat a day?
Start with one 10mg gummy a day and add one every few days until you notice a difference. Most people settle between 30 and 60mg a day; do not go above 70mg.
Can I take CBD gummies on an empty stomach?
You can, but you will absorb far less. The trials show several times more CBD reaching the blood when it is taken with a fat-containing meal. Take them with food, and keep the timing consistent.
How long do CBD gummies take to kick in?
Usually 45 minutes to two hours, because they are digested. Wait at least two hours before taking another.
Are CBD gummies legal in Ireland?
THC-free CBD gummies are sold as food supplements in Ireland. A gummy containing any THC would be classed as a narcotic drug under the FSAI’s reading of the Misuse of Drugs Act, so buy from a seller who publishes lab reports. Our guide to CBD law in Ireland has the full picture.
Are HempWell gummies vegan?
Yes. They are set with fruit pectin, not gelatine. Our capsules are the only non-vegan product in the CBD range.
Can I take gummies and CBD oil on the same day?
Yes. Count the total milligrams across both and stay within your usual daily amount.
