The Truth About CBD and Skin Barrier Health

Between K-beauty’s obsession with glass skin, the rise of “moisture sandwiching,” and the growing popularity of red light therapy, one skincare trend has quietly become the foundation of modern routines: barrier repair.

Today’s skincare philosophy looks very different from the multi-step, over-exfoliating routines that once dominated social media. Thanks to dermatologists, skincare experts, and a growing awareness of skin health on platforms like TikTok, consumers are increasingly embracing a “less is more” approach. Rather than layering countless products and active ingredients, the focus has shifted towards supporting the skin’s natural barrier with simple, effective formulations.

Influenced heavily by Korean skincare principles, this new era of skincare prioritises hydration, balance, and long-term skin health over quick fixes. As a result, ingredients that can complement a barrier-focused routine, including CBD, are attracting growing attention from both brands and consumers.

What is skin barrier repair?

Your skin barrier is the outermost layer of your skin, often compared to a brick wall. The skin cells are the bricks, while natural fats such as ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids act as the cement holding everything together.

When your skin barrier is healthy, it helps to lock in moisture and protect against pollution and other environmental factors, promoting smooth and supported, comfortable skin.

Factors such as over-exfoliation, harsh cleansers, excessive use of active ingredients, sun exposure, cold weather, and certain skin conditions can weaken the barrier so it is important to take the right precautions when thinking about your skincare routine.

Why CBD?

While CBD is not proven to repair the skin barrier on its own, researchers are exploring how cannabinoids interact with the skin’s natural systems. Combined with its antioxidant properties, CBD has become a popular addition to modern barrier-focused skincare formulations.

CBD is also a natural anti-inflammatory and can help reduce redness, itchy dry skin and help support symptoms associated with conditions such as psoriasis and eczema.

Other ingredients

Alongside CBD, there are a wide range of other ingredients that may help you to begin repairing your skin barrier and in turn, using herbal remedies can help reduce the amount of harsh products and chemicals in your pre-existing routine which may be the culprit behind your damaged skin barrier.

Chaga mushroom is an incredibly hard mushroom often described as being like a rock. Its main constituents are Betulinic acid derivatives and Melano-glucan complexes which come from the birch tree it grows on. It may have some natural anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties which is why it can help conditions like psoriasis.

Grape seed oil is often recommended for skin barrier support because of its fatty acid profile and antioxidant content. Grape seed oil can act as an emollient, filling gaps between skin cells and making the surface smoother while helping to reduce water evaporation. Grape seed oil can be found in our CBD revive and rescue skincare range.

Unlike many cosmetic oils, rosehip oil also contains alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid. ALA has anti-inflammatory properties that may help calm irritated or inflamed skin. These fatty acids also can help repair your skin barrier, getting you feeling smooth and bouncy. Rosehip oil can be found in our expert CBD skin care product AgeWell.

So, does CBD moisturise skin?

The question we get asked most: CBD itself is not a classic moisturising ingredient, but it can support hydration indirectly — calmer, less inflamed skin loses moisture less easily. In practice the moisturising work in a good CBD cream is done by its partner ingredients: our Revive & Rescue face cream uses glycerin for hydration, while our mango body butter and aloe & cucumber foot cream pair CBD with shea butter for dry, cracked or hard-working skin. Choose the product for the skin job, and let the CBD be the supporting act.
