The Endocannabinoid System: What you need to know

Where do we get our CBD from?

What the Endocannabinoid system is and how you can take CBD supplement to support it.

Introduction

If you have been researching CBD in hopes of using it for pain, anxiety, sleep or perhaps just general wellness, you may have come across something called the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). But what exactly is it? And why does it matter?

The ECS can be hard to understand so here is a deep dive on what it is and how we can support the system by taking CBD.

The Endocannabinoid System

The Endocannabinoid System (ESC) is a complex network of chemical signals and cellular receptors that are densely packed throughout our brain and body. It help that helps maintain homeostasis by regarding functions such as mood, sleep, appetite and pain.

The system consists of endocannabinoids which are body produced cannabinoids, receptors such as CB1 and CB2 that the cannabinoids bind to and enzymes that synthesise and degrade endocannabinoids.

When the body is out of balance, the ECS is activated to help restore equilibrium. Endocannabinoids are synthesised and realised, then bind to cannabinoid receptors on cells. This interaction signals cells to adjust their activity, helping the body return to a stable state.

We can supplement this system by taking CBD which helps with pain, sleep, anxiety and general wellness.

Brief history

CB1 receptors where discovered in 1988 and are concentrated in the mammalian brain and central nervous system. Research also shows that CB1 receptors are also present in the gut, skin and various internal organs. CB1 signalling is critical for regulating numerous physiological processes including the body’s stress response and how we regulate pain.

In 1993, researchers discovered the second major receptor, CB2. CB2 receptors are present in the immune system, the peripheral nervous system, metabolic tissue and in many internal organs.

Together, CB1 and CB2 form a widespread communication network that influences both the mind and body.

Promoting Wellness

The Endocannabinoid System is one of the body’s master regulators, working behind the scenes to keep everything in balance. Although research is still evolving, what we do know is that supporting the ECS—whether through lifestyle choices, diet, or cannabinoids like CBD—may play a role in promoting overall wellness.

The ECS can be supplemented and supported by taking CBD. CBD can be taken in many different form including an oil that is taking sublingually, capsules, gummies and topical creams. You can purchase CBD from HempWell here!
