CBD 101: A Complete Beginner’s Guide to Cannabidiol

If you’re new to CBD, you may have questions about what it is, how it works, and what forms are available. This guide will walk you through the basics of CBD, helping you understand its potential benefits and how to choose the right product for your needs.

 What is CBD?

CBD (short for Cannabidiol), is a naturally occurring chemical compound found in the hemp plant. Unlike THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive component of cannabis, CBD does not produce a “high.” Instead, it interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system to promote balance and wellness. CBD can be ingested orally, applied topically, or taken sublingually in the form of oils, capsules, gummies, and creams.

CBD is legal in the UK, provided it is derived from EU-approved industrial hemp and contains no THC. Contrary to the belief that CBD is dangerous and addictive, the World Health Organization stated in a 2017 report that CBD exhibits no effects indicative of abuse or dependence potential. Due to its lack of THC it does not cause a ‘high’ effect which causes addiction. However, it’s important to purchase from a trusted source. At Hempwell, we grow our own certified hemp and test each product to ensure purity and accurate dosages.

How Does CBD Work?

CBD works by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), a complex network of neurotransmitters and cannabinoid receptors that regulate various bodily functions. If you think of the ECS like a car’s dashboard it signals to the body what is out of balance and sends the CBD there to rebalance it. The ECS plays a role in processes such as mood, appetite, memory, and pain sensation. Research suggests that CBD may help modulate these processes by binding to certain receptors in the ECS.

Interestingly, the body produces its own cannabinoids (endocannabinoids) to help maintain balance (homeostasis). CBD is structurally similar to these endocannabinoids and can interact with the same receptors. CBD acts as an agonist for the CNR2 receptor, potentially reducing inflammation, and as an antagonist for the CNR1 receptor, which could help manage pain and anxiety.

How much should I take?

Everybody is different therefore everyone’s dose can be different. Depending on if you are using CBD for chronic illness or just general wellness your dose of CBD will differ. You can work out your dose (HERE) through our weight chart to see your low, medium and high dose. Our advice with dose is to start low and go slow, trust your own body and be consistent with how much you take.

 Types of CBD Products

There are various ways to use CBD, and the best option depends on your needs and preferences. Below are some common forms of CBD products:

 1. CBD Oils

CBD oils are typically taken sublingually (under the tongue) using a pipette for precise dosage control. Hempwell offers CBD Isolate Oils that contain pure CBD with no THC, and Broad-Spectrum Oils that include multiple cannabinoids but still contain no THC. The broad-spectrum oil may produce an “entourage effect,” where cannabinoids work together to enhance their effects.

Our CBD oils come in different strengths, ranging from 500mg to 4000mg. A higher concentration means less oil is needed, making it more cost-effective for long-term use. Our oils are all organically produced in Bulgaria with constant lab testing to ensure they are safe and effective.

2. CBD Capsules and Gummies

For those who prefer a pre-measured, convenient option, CBD gummies and capsules offer an easy way to ingest CBD. These forms are ideal for users who want to avoid the taste of hemp or coconut oil. Edible forms of CBD are the best portable solution for CBD on the go.

 3. Topical CBD Creams

CBD creams are applied directly to the skin and are excellent for targeting specific areas of pain or inflammation. Our Deep Relief Cream is popular for easing sore muscles, joint pain, and inflammation, particularly in conditions like arthritis. It comes in three strengths, 500mg, 1000mg and 2000mg with a cooling menthol effect for fast relief.

Another topical option is our skin care line for sensitive skin based issues such as psoriasis, eczema and acne. Our Revive and Rescue Cream is packed with 300mg of CBD with a fragrance-free, vegan cream formula. Perfect for nourishing dry, inflamed skin whilst soothing the most sensitive of areas.
